Skryne - All Ireland Club Football 7s Champions 2022
While Sam may have returned to the Kingdom, not one Munster team reached the knockout stages of the All Ireland Club Football 7s, as Meath’s Skryne clinched the title against Galway’s Mountbellew-Moylough.
The prestigious tournament hosted by Kilmacud Crokes returned for the first time since 2019 and was an action-packed exhibition of skill and high-scoring games. In addition to live stats at the tournament provided by Performa Sports, like the All Ireland Club Hurling 7s the week before, it was streamed live by PerformaTV. Our team at PerformaTV produced an impressive production with over 8,000 views of the knockout stage games which included four Quarter-Finals, both Semi-Finals and Final. Watch back the games.
Now to the action where Ulster clubs accounted for half of the Quarter-Final places, but only Naomh Columba could make it one step further. Mountbellew-Moylough overcame Dungannon Clarkes 4-09 vs 1-09 in the first Quarter-Final and live-streamed game of the day. Mountbellew-Moylough’s depth and quality showed in this game as 7 different players registered scores, with Team of the Tournament contenders Leo Donnellan and Mark Mannion both registering 1-01. The second team to exit in the Quarter-Final stage was Clonduff as they were narrowly beaten by Naomh Columba 3-08 vs 5-06. Clonduff registered 20 shots to their opponents 14 in the game, however the Donegal team registered a total shot conversion of 79% (+24% more than Clonduff) to win the all Ulster clash.
Next, eventual winners Skryne got their knockout stages off to a convincing start. Skryne defeated Erne Gaels from Belleek, Co. Fermanagh by 10 points. Despite both teams registering 19 shots, Skryne’s exceptional 95% total shot conversion rate saw them win the game 5-13 vs 3-09. The last Quarter-Final produced the tightest of games as Blessington defeated Ballyboden by one point (4-06 vs 2-11) and proved that goals win games in Football 7s!
Mountbellew-Moylough recorded a more convincing win in the Semi-Final as they ousted Ulster’s last remaining side Naomh Columba 4-08 vs 1-08. Colin Ryan, Matthew Barrett, Sean Kelly and Mark Mannion converted goals for the Galway side. The tournament’s second Semi-Final was a spectacle for all to watch as Skryne overcame Blessington 6-08 vs 7-04 to win by one point. The game was end-to-end with 25 scores registered in just two halves of 10 minutes. Team of the Tournament nominee Darragh Campion was decisive in this game, the highest scorer registering 3-02 for the Meath team.
The final was a much tighter affair with Skryne edging past Mountbellew-Moylough by 2-06 vs 0-10. Both teams registered 15 shots in the game and despite losing, Mountbellew-Moylough had a total conversion rate of 67% (14% higher than the eventual Champions). Skryne’s two goals were the decisive factor with Shane Smyth finishing to the net in injury time to dramatically clinch the title by two points. Skryne Captain Darragh Campion was also hugely influential as he scored 0-03 and saved a Mountbellew-Moylough penalty!
Performa Sports - All Star Football 7s Team 2022
The 2022 All Star Football 7s Team is based on collated stats from the Quarter-Finals onwards at the Kilmacud Crokes hosted tournament. Individual player performances were measured using a consistent set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including Kickouts, Shots from Play, Scoreable Frees, Turnovers Won and Frees Conceded. Each KPI is assigned a weighted value ranging from -3 to +3 to add a layer of influence to the impact of the KPI - we’ve labelled this as a Performa Sports Rating (PSR). This PSR value provides us with a deeper insight into the influence each player has on the pitch. All of the data was collected using the Performa Sports iPad app which allows us to produce a data driven team selection.
