Performa Sports, Ulster University and The Irish News team up for the Ulster Football Championship
We are delighted to have teamed up with Ulster University and The Irish News to analyse the 2017 Ulster Senior Football Championship. The coverage will include half-time and full-time stats followed by further post-game analysis of individual player performances based on an objective set of key performance indicators (KPIs). As the Championship progresses we will be building up a hub of performance data and observations to plot the journey of the two eventual finalists (Thomas Hawkins, Sports Editor of The Irish News with Joe Turley of Performa Sports, pictured below).
Ulster SFC Fixtures and Match Stats Reports
Our Process
We live tag games using the Performa Sports iPad app and export the half-time and full-time stats into the Performa Sports stats reporter for the Irish News to share online and incorporate in their print editions. Data visualisation and helping to bring meaning to numbers is a very important element for us and through the Championship we are aiming to improve on this further, so all feedback is welcome.
After the game we import the game video into the Performa Sports iPad app and sync both the data and video together to create our video analysis. We then over-tag on top of the video, secondary events in relation to the major events that were tracked live and add more detail to individual player events. This includes individual player possessions which we watch back on the Performa Sports iPad app in double time to make the process more efficient.
The full post-game analysis is exported to the Performa Sports stats reporter which extends its reporting further between selected data sets and individual player events. This includes an MVP (Most Valuable Player) per team based on the calculation of a weighted scoring against individual player events - PSR (Performa Sports Rating).
Part of our process may be limited however by accessibility to video footage, which in the main will be broadcast based and not ideal to accurately capture all individual incidents due to replays and camera switches.
What we're tracking - Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
We have selected a set of KPIs that we hope will be appealing and of interest to fans and participants of the Ulster Football Championship. Please see KPI definitions below:
