Portroe - All Ireland Club Hurling 7s Champions 2019
While Liam Sheedy helped guide Tipperary to lifting the Liam McCarthy Cup at Croke Park, his home club Portroe made sure it was a double All Ireland triumph for the premier county as they claimed the Hurling 7s title on the same weekend.
The prestigious tournament, now in its 47th year at Kilmacud Crokes was another action packed exhibition of skill and speed with the hurley and sliotar.
Clubs from Munster, Leinster and Connacht contested the knockout stages. In the first Quarter-Final Mayo’s Tooreen battled bravely but succumbed to the ruthlessly efficient attack of Moycrakey Borris who hit 10 goals and 2 points from play (85% shot conversion) to book a semi-final meeting with fellow Tipperary side Portroe. For their part, Portroe dominated the 2nd Quarter-Final with a convincing 7-04 v 1-04 win over St. Finbarr’s of Cork.
The 3rd Quarter-Final saw the all Dublin clash of Na Fianna and Naomh BarrÓg, with the Drumcondra club winning through by 2 points, while Galway’s Mullagh also overcame Na Piarsaigh of Cork by 2 points in a tightly contested 4th Quarter-Final pairing.
The semi-finals served up the two most exciting games of the 2019 hurling 7s. In the all Tipperary clash of Moycarkey Borris and Portroe, it was Portroe who reached their second consecutive final by the narrowest of margins winning 3-08 v 3-07. The subsequent Dublin and Galway semi-final was also a tightly contested match that ended level at full-time (Na Fianna 5-08 v 6-05 Mullagh). Goalkeeper Paddy Hardiman was the hero for the Galway club saving the first two Na Fianna penalties as Mullagh reached the All Ireland Club Hurling Final.
In the Final, Ronan and Davy Glennon (the tournament top scorer with 7-13(7f)) carried the main attacking threat for Mullagh but they couldn’t find a way past player of the tournament, Darren Gleeson. The former Tipperary Goalkeeper was in inspirational form throughout. His incredible triple save ensured a clean sheet for Portroe while he also scored 3 points, including one from play driven from his own goalmouth!
Portroe’s excellent team play and composure coupled with growing opposition fatigue saw the Tipperary men turnover 59% of Mullagh’s possession with the Galway men also giving up 41% of their own possession through unforced errors. John Sheedy (scored 0-01) and Kevin O’Halloran (scored 1-06(1f)) were also outstanding performers in the Final as Portroe came back from the anguish of last year’s final defeat to claim the All Ireland Club Hurling 7s Title on a scoreline of 4-13 v 0-10.
Performa Sports - All Star Hurling 7s Team 2019
The 2019 All Star Hurling Team is based on collated stats from the knockout stages of the tournament (Quarter-Finals to Final). Individual player performances were measured using a consistent set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including Puckouts, Shots from Play, Placed Ball, Tackle, Frees Conceded, Bookings, Ball Won, and Possessions Lost. Each KPI was assigned a weighted value ranging from -3 to +3 to add a layer of influence to the impact of the KPI - we've labelled this as a Performa Sports Rating (PSR). This PSR value provides us with a deeper insight into the influence each player has on the pitch. All of the data was collected using the Performa Sports iPad app which allowed us to produce a data driven team selection.
